An upper endoscopy, often referred to as an EGD, is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper portion of the small intestine. Using a flexible tube equipped with a small camera, physicians can closely evaluate the digestive tract for signs of irritation, inflammation, ulcers, or other abnormalities.

This procedure may be recommended to:

• Assess chronic heartburn or reflux symptoms

• Examine swallowing difficulties

• Identify stomach ulcers

• Investigate nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain

• Evaluate gastrointestinal bleeding

Preparation
